San Pedro, Belize

On Thursday 14.5 we took a ferry to San Pedro, a city in the southern part of the island of Ambergris in the province of Belize. From there we took a trip to the Barrier Reef in Belize. The Belize Barrier Reef System is a series of seven coral reefs along the shores of Belize, from the Mexican border in the north to the Guatemalan border in the south. The length of the reef system is about 290 km and it is about 300 meters from the northern shoreline and about 40 km from the southern shoreline. The total reef area is 963,000 acres. The entire system has been declared a protected site, under Belize law. In 1996, the Belize Barrier Reef System was declared a World Heritage Site. In the San Pedro area the reef is 300 meters from the shoreline. We left at 08:00 to snorkel at three different points including snorkeling with sharks and on Kolker Island feeding fish and watching seahorses. To tell the truth, our riffs in Eilat and also in Sinai are no less beautiful and colorful. Snorkeling at the Shark Farm was a special and fascinating experience.
