Antigua Guatemala (Spanish: Antigua Guatemala, commonly known as “Antigua”) is an ancient city in central Guatemala. The historic city, which has served as the state capital for more than 200 years, is famous for its colonial architecture that characterizes its streets, its unique and colorful houses, as well as historic buildings and well-preserved churches. Antigua was declared a World Heritage Site in 1979 by UNESCO.
At its peak, by the middle of the 18th century, the city had a population of 60,000. The famous earthquake that occurred on the continent in 1773 destroyed it completely and after it was abandoned. In 1776 the Spaniards ordered the transfer of the capital of Colonia to Guatemala City, a bustling metropolitan area and a crowd of about 2,000,000 million inhabitants. During the 19th century, the city was slowly inhabited at an increasing rate, but despite this, the city now has only about 40,000 inhabitants.
